In my last video I said that woven fabric doesn’t stretch, but I forgot about mechanical stretch on the bias. Here is how it actually works: Woven fabric only stretches diagonally (on the bias) because the woven threads shift angles. Knit fabric stretches in every direction because the loops themselves physically change shape. Both are mechanical stretch -- changing something about the fabric as a whole rather than the yarn itself stretching.
