The Vatican has highlighted Anna Medeossi, believed to be the world’s first woman to serve as rector of a Catholic shrine. A consecrated virgin and architect, Medeossi oversees the historic Marian Shrine of Notre-Dame de Santa Cruz in Oran, Algeria, where many visitors are Muslim.

She says the shrine has become a place of encounter, with the Blessed Virgin Mary providing a “path of dialogue” between Christians and Muslims.
