In the nuclear-blasted wasteland of 2087, water is the most precious commodity on Earth. The isolated community of Lost Wells survives only because it sits atop a secret, functional well, a miracle protected by the town's eccentric, peace-loving leader, Ethan. However, the town’s fragile safety is shattered when a brutal cult of Mansonites, led by a charismatic and delusional messiah named Derek, discovers the water source and begins a violent campaign to seize it for themselves.

The production of World Gone Wild was a classic example of 1980s independent filmmaking, marked by a grueling desert shoot and a significant legal hurdle that reshaped the movie’s villain. Filmed primarily in the scorching heat of the Arizona desert, the crew utilized the surreal, abandoned "Domes" of Casa Grande to create a sense of architectural decay. Director Lee H. Katzin leaned heavily into the "Dusty Western" aesthetic, using the harsh natural environment to save on set construction costs while leaning on the eccentric chemistry between veteran actor Bruce Dern and the stoic Michael Paré to ground the film's campier elements.
The most famous piece of behind-the-scenes lore involves a high-stakes legal threat from the Church of Scientology. In the original script, the post-apocalyptic cult led by Adam Ant’s character worshipped L. Ron Hubbard’s Dianetics as their sacred text. However, once the organization caught wind of the production and threatened a massive lawsuit, the producers panicked. In a bizarre pivot, they swapped Dianetics for a book about the notorious serial killer Charles Manson, turning the film's antagonists into "Mansonites." This last-minute change added an even darker, more satirical layer to the cult’s motivations that resonated with the era’s fascination with fringe movements.
Despite the difficult conditions and script changes, the film became a notable footnote in the career of New Wave icon Adam Ant. Stepping away from his music career to establish himself as a serious actor, Ant brought a flamboyant, "rock star" energy to the role of Derek that contrasted sharply with Bruce Dern’s weathered, hippie-guru performance. While the film didn't ignite a massive box office fire, the camaraderie on set and the bizarre creative choices—like the townspeople using an Emily Post book on etiquette as their moral compass—ensured that World Gone Wild would eventually find its place as a cherished relic of the 80s VHS era.
