frank howarth | Woodworking the Solar Eclipse @frankmakes | Uploaded 7 years ago | Updated 1 hour ago
We had an adventure this summer going to see the total solar eclipse on August 21st. This inspired me to make a wooden interpretation of the eclipse. My interpretation was to make the solar corona with a wide segmented ring of maple. With the CNC machine, I carved into the corona an image used as a height map of the corona. I then made a hemispherical walnut moon to go in the center leaving gaps between the moon and the corona so the sun can be seen through that seam.
Our quest to see the eclipse started two days prior when we drove to Corvallis from Portland trying to beat the traffic. As it turns out, the traffic was never an issue. We got up very early Monday morning on eclipse day to ride in a school bus to the top of Mary's Peak and watch the eclipse from there. It was amazing and the kids really enjoyed it. I would highly encourage anyone to try and see a total solar eclipse; it's the one time you get a sense of the scale of the Solar System.
