In this video, I take on a unique challenge — turning a beautiful but severely split piece of French oak that was gifted to me. The wood had a major split down one side, which meant I had to get creative right from the start.
To keep the piece together safely during the initial turning, I used two large jubilee clips as a temporary solution. After roughing it out and getting a basic shape, I designed and 3D printed a custom mould to support the next step: resin casting.
With the mould in place, I poured resin into the split, giving the piece both strength and a striking visual element. Once the resin had fully cured, I returned the blank to the lathe and turned it into a finished vase.
I completed the piece with Shellac and a final polish to bring out the rich tones of the oak and the glossy clarity of the resin.
