While most people see wooden roller coasters today as rough, older style rides, they are and have always been the starting point for roller coaster innovation. Beginning over 100 years ago, the concept would slowly evolve to the point where new technology would constantly be invented to thrill riders even further, and to do so in a safe manner. After the rise of tubular steel track through the 1960's, they would begin to fade out of style, before Kings Island would revive the concept and begin a renaissance of larger and larger rides capable of taking thousands of passengers an hour through hills and turns. This would continue to evolve until the peak of all roller coaster competition in the 90's, seeing dozens of rides open of all sorts of scales with more calculated and refined shaping for smoother and more intense rides. Today, manufacturers are pushing the limits even further, creating even more technology to push the boundaries of what was ever thought possible and influencing the entire amusement industry as a whole.
