The 2026 WonderFil Block of the Month is Butterfly Sanctuary, and we couldn't be more excited to share it with you.
This is a 12-block quilt program running through the end of the year, with new patterns dropping every month. A couple of months will include two patterns, so you'll always have something on the needle. The patterns are completely free just subscribe to our newsletter using the link below and they'll come straight to your inbox each month. Already subscribed from a previous BOM year? You're good to go.
This year's quilt comes in two versions, and you can choose one or do both.

Foundation Paper Piecing
The FPP version has a non-traditional block shape this year, which makes it a little different from your usual FPP project — in a good way. We'll be releasing tutorials and how-to videos throughout the year to walk you through it. For piecing and quilting, we recommend using DecoBob™. It's an 80wt cottonized polyester that keeps seams flat and reduces bulk, which matters a lot when you're working with a densely pieced or uniquely shaped block. The BOM 2026 Piecing DecoBob™ pack includes three spools and covers both your piecing and quilting.
Wool Appliqué
The wool version uses pre-cut Australian merino wool — the background piece and all appliqué shapes come ready to stitch. Block one is 8x8 inches and starts approachable, then each new block introduces 1–3 additional stitches. By December, you'll have worked through a solid range of hand embroidery techniques that carry into any future project.
Three thread packs are available for the wool version:
Ellana™ — a 12wt wool/acrylic blend thread dyed to match the WonderFil wool fabric, so your appliqué stitches sit seamlessly on the background. This pack includes 11 colors in bright, saturated shades chosen specifically for Butterfly Sanctuary.
Eleganza™ variegated — 9 balls of #8 perle cotton from the Alison Glass collection, featuring beautifully shifting, vibrant colorways
Eleganza™ solids 9 more balls of #8 perle cotton from the same Alison Glass collection, in coordinating solid shades
Because both Eleganza packs come from the same designer collection, all 18 colors are built to work together. The palette is bold and cohesive, and it really shows in the stitching.
You can order the wool and threads as a complete kit, or mix and match depending on what you already have at home.
