James Hansen: With Strong El Niño, 2026 is on Track to be Warmest Year ever, to be Surpassed in 2027
In this video I chat about the new article that James Hansen and his colleagues just posted regarding their prediction on 2026 being the warmest year ever, to be surpassed by an even warmer 2027.
Of vital importance is the Earth Climate Sensitivity for a doubling of CO2, which Hansen argues is 4 to 5 degrees Celsius for a doubling, and is therefore much higher than the IPCC value of 3 degrees C. Hansen argues that the IPCC number is wrong with 99% certainty, mainly due to handling the forcing from the aerosol indirect effect on low level clouds.
Hansen importantly argues on 4 independent lines of evidence supporting the 4-5 C per doubling of CO2 climate sensitivity.
These include:
1) Proper accounting for aerosol forcings, leading to a proper value of climate sensitivity, arguing that the IPCC has got both numbers wrong in their models and assumptions.
2) comparisons of temperatures at the peak of the last ice age 20,000 odd years ago with pre-industrial temperatures being greater due to last ice age temperatures being 6 to 7 degrees C cooler versus the previously thought 4 degrees Celsius colder
3) comparisons of temperatures during Snowball Earth 600 million years ago to todays temperatures
4) global warming temperature data over the last 200 years
I am over 99% certain that Hansen is correct, and that over the next year or so this will become increasingly obvious as Earth global warming continues to accelerate to record levels.

Abstract
Projections of near-term climate change are a potential research tool. However, for that tool to be most useful, the physical basis for a prediction must be made clear. The basis for our projection of record 2026 global temperature is high climate sensitivity, with its implication that aerosol cooling was still increasing during the period 1970-2005. One consequence, global sea surface warming, already has important effects. Causes of climate change must be understood for policy purposes. Figures in this post and our recent papers are continually updated on our website.

How Ongoing Ocean Stratification is Already a Really HUGE Deal and Will Mess Up Our Future Prospects
Ongoing ocean stratification is a HUGE deal, and will worsen greatly as global warming continues unabated.
It will have enormous implications to reduce vertical mixing of water, causing greatly accelerated warming, huge ecosystem kills in the ocean and on land, great reductions in the ocean sink of carbon and heat, huge increases in the numbers and extend of oxygen-dead zones in the ocean, and global havoc to humanity.
I chat about where we are at now, and where we are going. Buckle your seatbelts...

Peer-Reviewed Science article in journal Nature:
Ocean stratification in a warming climate
Abstract
The ocean is highly stratified. Warm, fresh water sits on top of cold, salty water, influencing vertical oceanic exchange of heat, carbon, oxygen and nutrients. In this Review, we examine observed and projected stratification shifts and their impacts. Changes in ocean temperature and salinity have altered the ocean density field, leading to a 0.8 ± 0.1% dec−1 (90% confidence interval) increase in stratification in the global upper 2,000 m since the 1960s. These increases are most pronounced in the tropics and are primarily temperature driven. Model simulations project ongoing stratification increases in the future, with global 0–2,000 m stratification increasing 0.7 [0.3,1.1; 13–87% confidence interval], 1.4 [0.9,1.8] and 2.9 [2.1,3.8]% dec−1 by 2090–2100 relative to 2010–2020 under Shared Socioeconomic Pathways SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5, respectively; regional patterns of projected stratification changes generally follow observed trends. These observed and projected ocean stratification changes have important climate and ecological consequences, including alterations in ocean heat uptake, ocean currents, vertical mixing, tropical cyclone intensity, marine ecosystems and elevation of marine extremes. Further research should better quantify stratification change at critical layers and understand their drivers and impacts.
