Winnipeg police are going to resume their crackdown on open drug use and trafficking — but this time, they will work with community outreach teams to help people in need, police Chief Gene Bowers says.

"The marked difference you're going to see will be the addition of the community outreach teams working with uniform officers to provide connections to resources and services or to assist those in need right there, right at the time," Bowers said at a news conference Thursday.

Stepped-up enforcement in areas where there are concerns about crime and social disorder will begin Friday and continue until November, when the initiative will be reassessed, he said.
