What do a yacht's sails have to do with offshore wind energy?

Edinburgh company SMAR Azure adapted its sail modelling technology to create the ACT blade. It's different to conventional blades for offshore turbines: instead of being made from solid glass fibre or composite materials, the ACT blade comprises a textile cover over a composite structure.

The innovative design could be game-changing for offshore wind. The blades are much lighter, which means they can be longer and produce more energy. They are also 30 percent cheaper to produce and easier to recycle - making them a cost-effective and sustainable option.

As part of an @Innovateuk funded project, ORE Catapult is working with partners to support the ACT blade and bring it to market.

Watch Donald MacVicar and Sabrina Malpede from ACT Blade explain the benefits of this next-generation turbine blade, and how it is being tested at the Energy Technology Centre's wind farm test site in Scotland.
