The Canada-U.S. relationship is under strain after trade talks collapsed last weekend. The U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on about $20 billion of Canadian goods.
Ottawa is responding with retaliation and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said negotiations are suspended. He added U.S. demands were unfair and would have boxed Canada in on autos in future trade deals. President Donald Trump threatened 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles, parts and steel next year.
The new levies affect a relationship worth hundreds of billions of dollars and extend far beyond consumer stereotypes, touching major sectors including autos, steel and lumber, along with a large two-way market.
In an interview with The National News Desk, a chancellor’s professor at Carleton University and co-chair of the expert group on Canada-U.S. relations, Fen Hampson said the dispute can still be resolved, but only if both sides dial back tensions.
"I think it can. We got to lower the temperature. We got to lower the rhetoric quite frankly, on both sides of the border,” Hampson said.
Hampson said Canada is a major buyer of U.S. products.
"Last year we bought, close to 350 billion of, goods that, are made in the United States. That’s about $1 billion worth of trade, a day," Hampson added.
The dispute has also become politically charged. Trump called Canada “a country that rips America off,” joked about making it the 51st state and threatened tariffs over wildfire smoke drifting to the U.S. On Thursday, he officially renamed Lake Ontario “Lake America.” On the Canadian side, Carney has said the fight is about sovereignty, not just tariffs.
Hampson said the breakdown in talks is likely temporary because of the economic consequences on both sides of the border, including in U.S. states that do business with Canada.
