Milestone Media launched in 1993 and was founded by writer Dwayne McDuffie, artist Denys Cowan, reporter and editor Derek T. Dingle and writer/artist/teacher Michael Davis. The company made strides in telling superhero stories about marginalized groups and underrepresented social issues/themes.
Their four initial comic titles included Hardware, Blood Syndicate, Icon and Static.
While Milestone’s initial run ended in 1997, it’s had reunions, revivals and animated adaptions like the Static Shock cartoon series and Young Justice. Virgil Ovid Hawkins aka Static is probably Milestone’s most iconic (sorry, Icon) and recognizable character.
That cartoon (starring actor Phil LaMarr) introduced an entire generation to Milestone (whether they knew it or not) and Virgil’s adventures as an up-and-coming superhero.
The thing about Static is that a lot of his life is based on one of Milestone’s founders, Michael Davis. Chaos ensues in this essay covering the history Davis’s role in creating the character.
