YouTube Channel Review #7: Blendtec
Back in 2006, Tom Dickson started putting his "Will It Blend?" series of videos on YouTube where various things get blended, including a rake, marbles, an iPhone, glow sticks, hockey pucks, and many many more items. In this YouTube channel review, I take a look at one of my favorite channels. Blendtec blenders are the top competitor to Vitamix, another top of the line blender, but what helps Blendtec keep an edge is the marketing. The "Will It Blend?" series has gone viral many times, it's especially popular among Millennials, who comprise a majority of the show's fanbase. Most likely this was inspired by David Letterman's series "Will It Float?" which began five years prior where Letterman would drop some object in a tank of water to see if it floated. Even the use of a quick introduction song is likely inspired from Letterman. In turn, this show has inspired various other destruction shows including to an extent "Is It A Good Idea To Microwave This?" which debuted a year after "Will It Blend?". One thing I forgot to mention in the video is the phrase "[item] smoke, don't breathe this!" which in some form has been around since the beginning, but in the form we now know it was began in early 2007, mere months after its launch in October of 2006. Unfortunately, however, there was a time when I thought the show ended and they'd switched to infomercials, so I made my own copycat series to carry the torch. Then months later a new "Will It Blend?" so I had no idea how to continue my blender series, so I just put it on indefinite hiatus back in December 2014. I think this might be my best YouTube channel review so far. Can I have your thoughts on this? Suggestions? Ideas?
