Ellie's Corner Case Update. Georgia Cappleman prosecutes. Florida State University. Monday evening, April 29, 2024, Elizabeth “Ellie” Sims is walking near the FSU campus, going North on Lorene Street. She approaches the intersection with West Pensacola Street, a one-way road with two lanes of travel, both going West, towards the son, with the Seminoles’ Football stadium just a few blocks away. For years, while attending law school, I lived near this area. There’s an obvious danger to pedestrians at the intersection- and two poles were put in place indicating that there’s a pedestrian walkway to cross Pensacola street. A yellow flashing light goes on when pedestrians cross, to warm motorists. Sadly, as Ellie was crossing Pensacola Street, she was struck by a Nissan Sentra. Ellie ended up more than 120 feet away from the impact point. The driver fled the scene in a “panic” (according to his self-serving statement, in which he also claimed that the person hit his car). He was later caught and charged, but that is little consolation to Ellie’s family, which now has to cope with such a devastating loss.
