Public parks right beside the DMZ border fence. We didn't expect that. Perfectly landscaped with comfy benches, a fake waterfall, some bathrooms... and a barbed wire fence in the background, where you can actually see North Korea!
We knew South Koreans had mandatory military training for all young men. We didn't know that DMZ border checkpoints would be listed as 'tourist attractions' on local map apps. And popular tourist attractions. Plenty of South Koreans were out with us,with big telescopes, spying on North Korea... from a Starbucks! Interesting to imagine the North Koreans looking back, wondering what they might be thinking.
So, in the end, we learned a lot about the Korean War, but we are still curious about how often South Koreans think about it. It doesn't appear that there is any real path towards reunification at the moment. My guess is most people just get on with their life.
