ABOUT THE WORK
The Nintendo Wii, released in 2006, is a massively successful video game console whose delightful motion controls and lighthearted vibe made it a hit for all ages and solidified it as a major part of many Yale students’ childhoods. In this arrangement, we revisit some of the classic songs that accompany the games on this beloved console.
The only proper place to start is with Wii Sports, the game that came with every Wii sold, and its instantly recognizable opening jingle. Wii Sports Resort follows up with a closely related theme, but is suddenly interrupted when the Mario Kart Wii race starts! The racers drive around Coconut Mall, accompanied by its infectiously catchy music, picking up an invincibility star on the way and picking up speed as they enter the final lap. As they cross the finish line, we hear the Finished Race music slowly winding down into the Mii Channel Theme, another popular song which has achieved meme status. The end might not go quite as you expect, though…
And then, Super Smash Bros: Brawl makes its dramatic entrance! Dozens of disparate video game characters approach for the battle, starting with the hero of Xenoblade Chronicles, Shulk! His game’s battle theme, Engage the Enemy, plays out before we return to the Smash stage. Next, as Mario approaches, we are whisked away to Super Mario Galaxy, where we hear the beautiful melodies of Gusty Garden Galaxy and Bowser’s Theme. After another brief return to the Brawl theme, our final competitors arrive: Zelda and Link! We hear the Ballad of the Goddess from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (did you know that the melody of this song is Zelda’s lullaby backwards? In a different key, too!), and return one last time to Super Smash Bros: Brawl for the finale. Listen for one last surprise in the winds just before the end!
