In this short video, why zero ohm resistors are used in electrical and electronic circuits is explained.
Here are the three main reasons for using zero ohm resistors.

1) Automatic Placement
Many times, a different sub-circuits are connected using the jumpers. (Using the jumpers, it is possible to isolate the sub-circuits)
In mass manufacturing of the PCBs, the pick and place machines are used for placing the components. These machines can place only certain types of components.
To reduce the cost, it is not preferred to use a separate machines for attaching a jumpers.
Therefore, 0-ohm resistors are preferred in place of the jumpers.

2) To isolate sub-circuits during initial testing
During the initial testing of the PCB, it is quite possible that, one wants to test only certain block of the circuit. Or some times, the additional circuit block is not used intentionally for future revisions of the design.
In such case, to isolate the different sub-circuit blocks, a zero ohm resistor is used. Just by simply not connected the 0 ohm resistor, it is possible to isolate two circuit blocks.

3) To prevent reverse engineering:
By intentionally adding 0-ohm resistor in the PCB tracks, it is possible to prevent someone from copying the design to certain extent. Generally, by using a zero ohm resistors with no markings, the reverse engineering of the design becomes even harder.
