Derek Van Schaik | Why your oldest sibling was mean to you @DerekVanSchaik | Uploaded May 2023 | Updated October 2024, 22 hours ago.
Was your older sibling mean to you for no apparent reason? It could’ve been oldest child syndrome, but what’s the psychology behind that.
Oldest child syndrome is characterized by dominating, bossy, responsible, outwardly caring, competitive, jealous, and controlling, which was to make your life as a younger sibling as miserable as possible. That last one may have been only slightly exaggerated. The theory is that they were originally the only child receiving all the attention and focus from your parents and relatives; however, that was abruptly taken away from them once you came along. Therefore, the older child may have felt strong jealousy and resentment towards you, but quickly realized that in order to maintain their desired level of attention, they had to compete for it by acting outwardly more mature and responsible, which many times caused them to appear as a suck up. Mommy, what can I do to help you because baby is acting very bad today? Those attributes are so instrumental in their formative development that naturally many of them may carry through into their adulthood.
Middle child syndrome is next, so follow for more.
