Derek Van Schaik | Can you actually die from boredom? @DerekVanSchaik | Uploaded May 2023 | Updated October 2024, 22 hours ago.
Have you ever been so bored and isolated you felt that you may just die, and what’s the psychology behind that?
Turns out that you’re not too far off because boredom and isolation can be deadly. We have psychologically evolved to become primarily social pack beings who must feel productive; however, take away both and we may literally become mentally and physically ill. Solitary confinement is basically torture by boredom and isolation. We may first feel fatigue, restless, fidgety, stressed, anxious, muscle tension, depressed, then even changes in appetite, psychosis, impaired cognitive functioning, PTSD, increased risk-taking behaviors, elevated heart rate, due to our bodies constantly releasing the stress hormone cortisol thereby possibly leading to cardiovascular disease.
In a social psychology experiment, it was found that when those who were placed in solitary confinement for even less than 15 minutes are given the option to give themselves an electric shock or just stay bored, they many times choose to give themselves an electric shock. This suggests that boredom and isolation can be more painful than electrocution.
