Histamine intolerance is often approached as if it's simply a list of foods to avoid. Tomatoes, avocado, spinach, leftovers, fermented foods and red wine all end up being seen as the problem. Stop eating these foods and you'll be fine.

Restricting histamine in your diet is where you start, not where you end!

If a patient is noticeably improved on a low histamine diet I will take this information, this feedback as information. It tells me that histamine is involved. But what it doesn't tell us is WHY that patient suddenly became intolerant to foods they may have eaten for years with no problems.

Sometimes there is bacterial overgrowth, gut inflammation or dysbiosis adding to the histamine load. Other times I suspect mast cells are involved from mould exposure, chronic stress, poor sleep and hormonal changes or even nutrient deficiencies affecting histamine breakdown. It could even be several different layers sitting on top of one another leading to the symptoms.

In this video, I want to walk through how I think about histamine intolerance clinically, why low histamine diets can be extremely helpful without necessarily explaining the underlying problem, and why treatment often changes quite dramatically once we stop asking, "What am I reacting to?" and start asking, "Why has my body lost tolerance in the first place?"

My goal for everyone I work with isn't to support them to simply avoid healthy food. It's to rebuild the resilience that allows the body to tolerate those healthy foods again and thrive!
