In this TED Talk, Raajvir Vijay shares the motivation behind creating his sleep app, Somnia, and explores why teenagers struggle with sleep. He explains the biological, social, and psychological factors that contribute to sleep deprivation among teens, and delves into the neuroscience behind the harmful effects of insufficient rest. Inspired by his father’s experience with insomnia, Raajvir developed Somnia as a new sleep aid for insomniacs. He introduces Somnia as a practical solution, designed to help teenagers improve their sleep patterns through an innovative technique called cardiac coherence. With or without the app, Raajvir emphasizes that sleep is essential for promoting mental well-being and productivity. As a high schooler and entrepreneur, Raajvir has a fervent passion for creating innovative projects and engaging in business and technology competitions. Taking his enthusiasm a step further, he assumed the role of lead organizer for TISBHacks (The International School Bangalore’s annual hackathon) in both 2023 and 2024, establishing it as one of India’s premier student-led hackathons. In his talk, Raajvir will delve into sparking innovation among youth through forums such as hackathons.
