TEDx Talks | Let's save the ocean with creativity | The Trash Traveler | TEDxPorto @TEDx | Uploaded 3 days ago | Updated 1 day ago
Andreas Noe, aka The Trash Traveler, challenged us: can we approach environmental issues in a positive way? Alongside all the anxiety-causing news about the environment and climate change, we need to be hopeful to solve the most difficult crisis humanity has ever faced. In a light, good-humoured, and contagious approach, he guided us along the path of falling in love with nature. Each one of us can make a difference by starting a movement that brings people together to start acting and speaking out in favour of the ocean, in a fun and creative way that raises awareness.
Andreas Noe is a biologist who came to Portugal to pursue his career in biomedicine. In 2019 he left his job to raise awareness of environmental issues by creating creative community campaigns complemented by art.
In 2020, he travelled the entire length of the Portuguese coast in two months to raise awareness of the problem of plastics in the oceans. In 2021, he invited the community to collect one million cigarette butts. In 2022, he reused second-hand bicycle parts to build a "new" bicycle and raise awareness of a circular economy on a 2370 km journey through Portugal.
The most recent community project, "The Trash Art Awards", an annual worldwide challenge that encourages citizens to collect rubbish that is then transformed into a work of art, marking the act with a photograph, finished shortly before he gave this talk. So far 83 works of art have been made around the world, with the aim of making voices heard in favour of protecting the oceans. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx
