Are you noticing these symptoms occur more frequently this summer? There’s a reason for it. High heat and humidity, overindulgence in iced drinks and foods can overload our Spleen organ system.
In Chinese medicine the Spleen system (that runs from toes to abdomen) has several important jobs in the body.
This system is made up of “hardware” - the physical spleen organ itself, plus its corresponding energy pathway.
And this hardware runs “software”
that enables good gut health, prevents excess fluid build up, builds strong healthy muscle and flesh, and helps produce healthy high quality Blood and Qi. These are its main jobs in the body.
When the Spleen’s software is doing a good job, we say the Spleen Qi is strong. This means stronger digestion, better overall gut health, strong healthy muscles, proper immune defenses, good processing of fluids and lymph, better sleep, less worry more brain clarity, more energy.
The western medical understanding emphasizes more the Spleen’s role in building the immune system. And in TCM it’s no different. Notice how many of the TCM Spleen functions are the building blocks of immune strength.
Now that you’ve gotten to know your Spleen better through the eyes of TCM, how do you feel your Spleen is doing? Let us know in the comments!!
