Why you should never EQ in solo, and what to do instead.
This is the number 1 mistake I see when students come to me. They solo a sound, decide it sounds woolly, and start EQing until it sounds better. And in solo, it does.
The problem is everything they cut and boosted was judged on its own. Put it back in the mix and the guitars suddenly sound thin, and the low end that was quietly supporting the vocal above it has gone. What sounds right in solo is often exactly what the mix was relying on.
So EQ with the whole mix running. Judge every move by what it does to the record, not the soloed track. You'll find you need a lot less processing that way.
