The Zone of Interest explores the complex personal lives of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss and his wife as they live next to the concentration camp. It's hardly a feel-good flick, and it won't appeal to everyone -- or even many people. And A24 has embraced that model, because per-screen revenue from lower-budget films like The Zone of Interest can not only be as good as the CGI-fueled blockbusters, but can occupy the overlap between art, culture, and economics.
