Here, I explain how intermittent fasting differs from time-restricted eating, where the research comes from, and why that matters for active midlife women. This clip explores why exercise delivers stronger signals for health and longevity than fasting, and how female physiology-XX genetics, higher mitochondrial density and antioxidant capacity, and two nutrient-sensitive kisspeptin centers in the hypothalamus - changes our response to low energy availability. I talk through what happens when women train fasted or restrict carbohydrates: kisspeptin downregulation, appetite hormone disruption, a reduced LH pulse, and knock-on effects for the menstrual cycle.
I also outline why active women perform better in a fed state, how womenβs fuel use in training differs from menβs, and why eating with circadian rhythm-fuel during the day, stop around 7-8 pm, breakfast the next morning often works better than rigid fasting windows. The common fasting benefits you hear about (glucose control, autophagy, cognition) are largely from male data and arenβt seen in female data.
