Why We LOVE Ancient History : A Personal Journey
Regarding the specific allure of ancient history, a comprehensive scholarly response must acknowledge a multitude of intersecting factors. However, three primary catalysts emerged during my formative years. As a teenager, I was frequently met with the assertion that historical study was an unfashionable and irrelevant pursuit; as the millennium approached, many suggested that the past held no legitimate place within the modern world and that public interest had largely waned. Yet, I possessed an innate conviction that this perspective was profoundly flawed.
In many ways, it was this very opposition that compelled me to recognize history as my life's vocation. I recognized in the ancient world an extraordinary reservoir of truth, philosophical discourse, and human experience that demanded to be shared with a broader audience. Ultimately, my academic tenure at Oxford, where I specialized in ancient and medieval history, solidified my resolve to devote my professional life to these hallowed narratives.
