On 15 August 1947, Delhi held the swearing-in of Lord Mountbatten as Governor-General and some 300 flag-hoisting ceremonies. Crowds chanted "Mahatma Gandhi ki jai." Gandhi himself was in none of it. This video explains why he refused to celebrate Independence Day.
Two weeks before Independence he left Delhi, spent four days in Kashmir, and reached Calcutta at around 3 PM on 13 August. He took up residence at Hydari House on Beliaghata Road โ a ramshackle building in a Muslim-dominated locality. There was no welcome. A year of communal violence following Direct Action Day (1946) had turned the same crowds that had cheered him for three decades against him.
Drawing on Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre's Freedom at Midnight (1975) and Ramachandra Guha's India After Gandhi, we cover the starvation in Calcutta, the promise Gandhi extracted at Noakhali, his replies to the Hindustan Times and the BBC, and the price of Partition that he was never willing to accept.
