MGNREGA to VB-G RAM G: Why Did Rural Jobs Fall 50% Despite a 125-Day Guarantee?
VB-G RAM G replaced MGNREGA with effect from 1 July 2026, increasing the statutory employment guarantee from 100 days to 125 days per rural household.
Yet in the first month of the new scheme, rural employment generation was almost half the level recorded a year earlier:
July 2025: 15.33 crore person-days
July 2026: 7.67 crore person-days
Decline: 49.94%
But what does this number actually mean? And does a 50% decline in person-days mean that 50% of rural workers lost employment?
