TL;DW: You get the most value out of leveling up Vigor as soon as possible. You can triple your health by bring Vigor up to 40. This is a game where the enemies do a lot of damage, so it's pretty obvious that you want to have more health. Upgrade Vigor BEFORE you upgrade any other stats.
Lots of people like to upgrade their damage stats first, such as Strength or Intelligence. This is wasteful. *Most of your damage comes from upgrading your weapons,* not from your damage stats. In this video I show the difference by putting 20 points into Strength, which gives me 20% more damage with a Broadsword-- OR by upgrading the Broadsword to +3, which gives exactly the same damage increase.
Those 20 points are better spent on Vigor: I can either level up Strength to 30 and do 20% more damage, OR I can _*level Vigor to 30 and have 140% more health.*_
You can level up your weapons and your Vigor at the same time, and that's what you should prioritize on EVERY. SINGLE. CHARACTER. at the start of the game. The main stat for EVERY build is VIGOR and you will have a better time with this game if you level up Vigor first.
