Established in 1963, Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens (Devon, PA - Zone 7), only started after H. Lawrence Jenkins decided to bequeath his 20-acre property as a living memorial to his late wife. His request was simple and open: [Use the land to create “a …public park, arboretum, and wildlife sanctuary for the use of the public and responsible organizations engaged in the study of arboriculture, horticulture, and wildlife for educational and scientific purposes.”
Touched by the gesture, Louisa Browning, whom lived next door, deeded her adjacent 26 acres to the public shortly thereafter—and it was these two offerings which gave Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens its start with an emphasis on creating a serene, naturalistic, and ecological-based garden for the public to enjoy.
I met up with Jenkin’s Executive Director, Tom Smarr, to learn more of the history of the arboretum and gardens and take a tour of the place. You can visit yourself here: jenkinsarboretum.org
