On our journey through some of Pennsylvania's finest gardens, we arrived at Andalusia Historic House, Gardens & Arboretum—not quite knowing what awaited us. From the driveway, the stately Greek Revival mansion commands your attention. But beyond it, the landscape unfolds in ways we never expected.
A sweeping lawn rolls toward the Delaware River, formal gardens give way to intimate garden rooms, towering specimen trees frame centuries-old vistas, and woodland paths lead to discoveries around nearly every bend. It's a landscape that feels both timeless and surprisingly alive.
Perched above the very stretch of the Delaware where George Washington crossed with his troops in 1776, Andalusia was established just a few decades after America's founding. Over the past 230 years—and through seven generations of the Biddle family—the estate has continued to evolve, each generation adding another chapter to its remarkable landscape.
To help us explore its gardens, we met with Kristin Biddle, whose family continues that legacy today. She guided us through Andalusia's extraordinary collection of spaces—from formal terraces and clipped holly parterres to romantic cottage gardens, woodland walks, and one of the region's finest collections of mature trees.
