Parts of California’s southern border have been designated a military-controlled National Defense Area after the federal government transferred about 700 acres of public land in San Diego and Imperial counties to the U.S. Navy for three years.

Supporters say the move allows faster infrastructure development, additional military support, and reduced strain on Border Patrol. Critics argue it represents over-militarization of the border and raises concerns about military involvement in domestic enforcement.
