Apple launched two new Mac minis, and the cheaper one has a newer chip than the more expensive one. That's not a mistake. $900 gets you the M6 mini, and $1,700 gets the M5 Pro that shipped earlier this year in the MacBook Pro.
Chip names carry two pieces of info. The number tells you when it was designed, the word after it tells you how big it is. So the M6 is a fresh generation of the small chip, and the M5 Pro is double the size of the M5 and the last generation of the big chip. The M6 wins single-core, but the M5 Pro wins anything that scales and moves memory about twice as fast.
One thing at a time? Get the M6. Heavy workloads? The M5 Pro is still the better buy.
