Did Sunni and Cubbi belong together all along? Let’s settle the ultimate Disney Afternoon debate! 🐻✨
To celebrate 18 incredible years of making content on this platform, I have put together a very special compilation of three videos I’ve created over the years.
In this "Trio of Complimentations," we are looking back and laying out the ultimate defense for why Sunni and Cubbi are absolutely destined for each other!
If you look at animation history, the precedent is already there. Disney has proven time and time again that when young characters become friends as cubs or adolescents—especially when they grow up under the same roof or share the same glen—their eventual relationship is practically a foregone conclusion.
Just look at the all-time classics: Bambi and Faline from Bambi, or Simba and Nala from The Lion King. They might just be kids figuring things out at the beginning, but history shows it is destiny!

The "Shared Generation" Bond: As the only youth left in Glen, they share a unique, isolated experience navigating the legacy of the Great Gummis in a world of humans and Ogres. No one else understands their specific pressures and dreams but each other.
The Ultimate "Opposites Attract": She’s all about high-society culture, fashion, and royal daydreams. He’s fiercely dedicated to action, knighthood, and honor. Cubbi grounds Sunni’s lofty fantasies, while Sunni’s emotional intelligence softens Cubbi’s reckless edge. They perfectly balance each other out!
Fierce, Unspoken Loyalty: Sure, they fight over pudding and poke fun at each other—that’s a classic animation trope! But when Duke Igthorn, the Carpies, or any other threat puts them in danger, their protective instincts for one another are completely unmatched.
The Ultimate Proof: Just look at the episode "A Gummi in a Gilded Cage"! When Gruffi and Cubbi are on their way to save Sunni from the Carpies, Cubbi hears her singing in the cage, sounding ill and exhausted.
He instantly drops everything and springs into action to save her. It’s a brilliant early hint of a deeper connection that the show’s era didn't allow them to fully explore at the time.
The Human Parallel: The writers actually laid the groundwork right in front of us through their human allies! Cubbi’s best friend, Cavin, has a massive, undeniable crush on Sunni’s best friend, Princess Calla—who absolutely feels the same way. The humans having a romantic dynamic is a massive hint that a very similar destiny was waiting for Sunni and Cubbi down the line!
We are diving deep into 90s nostalgia, classic Disney animation tropes, and the childhood-friends-to-lovers arc that was sitting right in front of us the whole time.
