Welcome back to the channel! In this must-see review, we are breaking down everything that happened in last week's intense Vice TV episode of Dark Side of the Ring covering "Paul Orndorff: Saving Mr. Wonderful". I want to make it very clear right up front that this is a discussional review where I talk about the series—there is no raw episode shown here, just my pure review and commentary.
First off, full transparency on the delay: I was actually going to upload this yesterday, but real life came up. Family came home late from work because a training session went a little too long, and by the time things settled down, I just didn't get the chance to hit publish. Because of this schedule shift, please note that this review was recorded BEFORE last night's new "The Walking Riot: Missy Hyatt" episode aired. I haven't even had a chance to watch the Missy Hyatt episode yet, so no spoilers in the comments! I will be watching it as soon as I can, and my review for that will be coming up next.
Now, let's get into last week's Paul Orndorff episode. Vice TV and the creators of Dark Side of the Ring did a fantastic job capturing his legendary legacy, the massive 1980s box office run with Hulk Hogan (including the iconic 68,000+ sellout at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto), and the emotional tragedy of his later years alongside his son Travis's efforts to help him.
However, before hitting record, I did a deep dive into what the wrestling community has been discussing—checking wrestling Reddit, forums, and top creators like Solomonster Sounds Off.
While Solomonster covered the famous backstage altercation with Vader in his review (be sure to check out his channel or look for the video link/card at the end of this review if you want the details on that incident!), in my review I am diving into several crucial historical moments that Dark Side of the Ring completely glossed over:
The WrestleMania III Stand-In Reality: Why Orndorff didn't have a featured match at WrestleMania III—the backstage plan was to keep him on standby as the emergency backup for Andre the Giant in case Andre wasn't physically able to go.
The 1987 Babyface Turn & Survivor Series: Firing Bobby "The Brain" Heenan, bringing in Sir Oliver Humperdink as his manager, and joining the very first Hulkamania team at the inaugural 1987 Survivor Series, centering around whether Hogan could truly trust him.
The UWF, AWA, & Early '90s Run: His journey outside the WWF across the independents, Herb Abrams' UWF, and the final era of the AWA.
WCW Championship Resurgence: His early 1990–1991 WCW run and his massive comeback in 1992–1993, capturing the WCW World Television Championship and finding major success in the tag team division as World Tag Team Champion.
