"Stay Positive" is advice I am seeing going around - including in the media. I am sure all the people providing this advice are well-meaning. And I do not think it is good advice. It assumes that I am positive and that I should just stay as I am already. And it isn’t actionable advice. Did you just lose your job, well just stay positive!

I can tell you if I had said that to people who were calling in when I was at LifeLine, it would not have gone down well. People in my view need understanding, empathy and support if there is something to can be done, clear actions about what to practically do next. Coaching around acceptance, I think it also really important. Not to accept things just because, but to accept what can not be changed and focus attention on what they can influence and impact today.

So what would I recommend here? Maybe something like “stay focussed on what you can impact and accept what you can’t”. This is advice I am working to take myself as much as possible. My questions to myself are around what can I make my life as impactful and positive as possible. How do I stay focussed on looking after myself, physically, mentally and spiritually? And to accept what I can’t impact.

Let’s all be kind to ourselves. 🙂 Don’t put yourself under the pressure to stay positive. Stay yourself and live the best you can.
