Chet Fenster of Mobi.thinking explains why mobile phone based websites and applications are the future for modern communication. The great opportunity for the heritage sector is to take advantage of these 'always on' mobile users to provide them with cheap, effective interpretation by scanning QR codes and NFC Tags and even providing Augmented Reality at keysites and points of visitor interest. A few recent statistics support how strongly people are now attached to their mobile devices:

94% of people over 16 owns a mobile phone (OFCOM -- Q1 2012)
61% of all mobile owners use their phone's camera (OFCOM -- Q1 2012)
40% of all mobile owners use them to access the web (OFCOM -- Apr 2011)
10% of all web page views are from a mobile device (StatCounter May 2012)
50% own a smartphone (camera, web, web apps) (Guardian - May 2012)
92% of smartphone owners access the internet (OFCOM Q1 2012)
87% of smartphone owners use apps on their phone (OFCOM Q1 2012)
37% of adults (60% of teens) addicted to smartphones (OFCOM -- Q1 2012)
