93 million miles away, a blast of charged particles has started screaming its way toward Earth. This solar flare has the potential to disrupt our power grids, GPS, and even satellites. During the Sun’s most active phases, this scenario has the potential to play out hundreds of times each month. Now, Surya, a new AI foundation model for solar physics from IBM and NASA, is here to help. Available open source, it's first of its kind and can be used to predict the kinds of intense solar outbursts that can endanger astronauts, satellites, and technology here on Earth. IBM Research's Mike Murphy recently caught up with Johannes Schmude, an AI researcher who was the technical project lead, to learn more about the model and its possible use cases.
