Why does Mario look the way he does? The answer teaches us everything about smart design! The mustache, the overalls, the hat...they were all solutions to design problems!
Mario's sprite in Donkey Kong was designed on a canvas limited to 16x16 pixels with only 3 animation frames to depict a run cycle due to hardware limitations. But Shigeru Miyamoto made the character and movement read perfectly due to his background as a graphic designer!
Limited hardware led to smart design. Constraints forced clarity. And the funny part is that they liked the design so much that #nintendo stuck with it even when hardware improved...because THIS was Mario...everyone's favorite plumber (who in Donkey Kong was actually a construction worker...)!
All that is to say...what is it that your overthinking that could be improved by simplifying?
