Did you know that, originally, our New Year took place in MARCH and NOT January? ...Makes so much more sense, right? You may feel that this aligns a lot more with what's happening outside our window, as the shift from winter's dormancy to spring unfolds.
But the shift from March as the beginning of the year to January was a strategic move to synchronize the calendar with Earth's orbit around the sun. This ensured a more accurate alignment with the solar year and mathematical accuracy of calculating important Christian feast days, such as the celebration of Easter. However, this shift not only impacted the timing of the new year, but also subtly altered the cultural and spiritual significance attached to various months and seasons, pulling us further away from ancient understanding of cyclical rhythms in nature.
The societal pressure to conform to the traditional New Year's resolutions on January 1st exemplifies this haste also. This consumer-driven frenzy around post-holiday sales and fitness promotions perpetuates the notion that transformation must occur instantly. The symbolic renewal associated with spring lost its direct connection to the cyclical patterns of the natural world, resulting in missed opportunities for deep self-discovery and intentional evolution.
Where do we want to take root in the unfolding year of 2024? What are we attaching (limiting) ourselves to, and what nutrients do we seek for our growth? Winter is not merely a season; it's a gradual transition, a loading bar, a time for inner wisdom to surface. It's a magical, potent time when the veil between the seen and unseen worlds thins, offering opportunities for divination and reflection. Sometimes that takes a while.
SO, let's reclaim this origin by cherishing moments of winter's silence, collecting wisdom, and activating new cycles with intention and purpose!
