Why is the Sand White? White Sands, New Mexico
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Have you been to White Sands, New Mexico before? It's an otherworldly landscape like nothing else on the planet! White Sands is a National Monument in Doña Ana County New Mexico on the Southern end of the White Sands Missile Range along Route 70. The National Monument is home to an exceptional and rare collection of gypsum sand dunes. Gypsum is a mineral that is soluble (meaning it will often dissolve in water, just like salt does) for this reason to have such a large collection of gypsum sand is indeed remarkable. The gypsum came from an ancient seas that covered the area. Rain water would dissolve gypsum in the mountains which then would run down into the valley. These ancient seas and lakes eventually dried up leaving this large deposit of gypsum. White Sands is the largest deposit of surface gypsum in the world.
Gypsum sand is different than normal Quartz sand in that it reflects large amounts of light. Each grain of sand is scratched and scraped because gypsum is a very soft mineral. These micro scratches reflect large amounts of light, making the sand appear white. Gypsum sand is also unique in that it dissipates heat very quickly. Whereas Quartz sand will heat up and can easily burn you, gypsum sand tends to stay quite cool, reflecting the heat of the suns rays. If you dig your feet down into the dunes at White Sands you may be surprised how cool it is! This is one of the reasons the most popular activity at White Sands is sand sledding! Even on a sunny day the dunes can still be played on.
It's hard to deny the exceptional beauty of the White Sands National Monument. The white shifting dunes framed against the dark mountains makes it hard to get a bad picture any way you turn. Unfortunately the park will probably always remain a National Monument instead of graduating to National Park status. This is due to the adjoining missile range and the potential conflict of interest that would emerge from National Park status. The National Monument is closed occasionally when military operations are being performed in the area. Definitely check to make sure the park is open if you plan to visit.
