I love turning pots on this chuck. It’s a solid mass of clay, which it needn’t be, as in theory you could hollow it out from beneath to lighten it, yet its solidity helps it hold itself onto the wheel as it spins around, which means there’s no need to pin it in place with other soft lugs of clay or with slip.
Sometimes, if the rim section of a pot is particularly thin and delicate, I worry that forcing bits of clay around the rim to secure it in place may distort the shape of the bowl itself, thus having one of these handy is extremely useful, as the thick mass keeps the opening circular, whilst holding it nicely in place.
After it’s use, I dunk the lump of clay in water for a couple of seconds and then wrap it up very tightly, this way, the same chucks can be kept leather hard for years provided they’re stored well, I wrap mine up tightly in plastic and then store them all in an airtight box. Inside, I keep a variety of shapes for different needs, there’s chucks for bottles and even one for the ink dip pens I used to make, if you remember those? It’s been years since I last made a batch but I’ll feeling reinvigorated after doing rather a lot of drawing myself recently. Maybe that’s a project for once this next online shop restock is out of the way.
