I haven’t made store jars like this since 2017. Nearly a decade. The first versions, made in 2014, were heavier and had thicker rims, blobby knobs and they a tendency to lean to one side. The newer versions produced in this video are lighter and are far more refined.

They demand more from the process. The rim is split as the pot is thrown, one part forming the lip, the other set inward to create the gallery. It requires foresight and control and can very easily go wrong... The lids are thrown separately, trimmed, then finished with small, carefully thrown knobs. It's precise work with little room for error and they are, in truth, more trouble than they’re worth. Which is why I returned to them.

Coming back after this long shifts the challenge. What once felt difficult becomes manageable and subtler problems take its place. Small efficiencies have emerged after almost a decade of practice and I think these have a better sense of proportion. I’m still unsure if they belong within my current body of work, but for now, they feel like a useful conversation with the past and they've been a welcome change of pace as compared to my usual storage vessels.

I hope you found the video useful and thanks for watching!
