What happens when your IFR flight plan meets a wall of thunderstorms in the remote North? In this episode of Glen's Hangar, Julie and I set off on an ambitious journey from Oshawa (CYOO) to Radisson, Quebec, to visit the largest hydroelectric station in North America. But as every pilot knows, the sky always has the final say.
Inside this episode:
IFR in Uncontrolled Airspace: Watch as we transition from Toronto Center to flying IFR in uncontrolled airspace—a unique Canadian experience where the pilot is responsible for their own separation and regular position reports.
The Val-d'Or Pitstop: We stop for fuel at Val-d'Or (CYVO) and get a behind-the-scenes look at a massive Beaver turbine conversion operation.
The $2.5 Million Beaver: Seeing these legendary bush planes being rebuilt with brand-new wings and turbine engines that get them off the water in seconds.
Thunderstorms & Lightning: After departing Matagami (CYNR) for the final leg north, we encounter heavy rain and active lightning. I take you through the decision-making process of when to turn back to ensure everyone's safety.
Stuck in Matagami: When "Time to Spare, Go by Air" becomes the reality. We find ourselves grounded by weather, reminding us that even with an IFR rating, you can't beat lightning and icing.
Aviation is about the journey, not just the destination. Sometimes the best decision a pilot can make is the one that keeps the wheels on the ground.
Timeline:
0:00 - IFR Clearance & Departure from Oshawa
2:22 - Climbing through the layers into the sun
4:30 - The reality of icing in the clouds
7:10 - Deviating for weather into Val-d'Or
8:55 - Inside the Beaver Turbine Conversion Hangar
11:35 - Explaining Uncontrolled IFR Airspace
14:45 - Arrival and Departure from Matagami
16:50 - Encountering Lightning & The Decision to Turn Back
18:45 - Grounded: Weather Briefing and Final Thoughts

![Major IFR Upgrade One Wire at a Time! Day 2 & 3
Join me as we tackle a major avionics upgrade on the aircraft, including removing the old wiring harness, installing a brand new Fast Stack harness, custom-fitting a new panel face from Six-Pack Aero, and mounting multiple GPS, NAV, and COMM antennas. Watch the chaos turn into clarity as we work through tight spaces, unexpected screw-ups, and creative solutions—with a whole lot of Clecos and rivets!
This project isn’t just about aviation—it’s also part of our 2025 Give Hope Wings flight across Canada to raise funds and awareness for Hope Air, a charity helping Canadians access life-saving medical care in faraway cities. Learn more about this cause and how you can help below.
💡 If youre thinking about an IFR upgrade, panel rebuild, or curious about modern avionics setups, this behind-the-scenes look is for you!
🎗️ Support HOPE AIR | Give Hope Wings 2025
This project also supports a bigger mission. In 2025, Im flying across Canada with Give Hope Wings, raising funds and awareness for Hope Air — a charity that provides free travel for Canadians who need to reach critical medical care far from home.
🇨🇦 Canada is a vast country, and while healthcare is universal, getting to treatment often isnt. Hope Air bridges that gap, and your support makes a real difference.
