Why does Elizabeth I have THREE nearly identical Armada Portraits? In this video, we uncover the hidden symbolism behind one of the most famous royal portraits in British history — and the propaganda machine behind it.
The Armada Portrait of Elizabeth I commemorates England's 1588 victory over the Spanish Armada, but it's far more than a celebratory painting. From the pearls symbolising her status as the "Virgin Queen," to her hand resting on a globe pointing at Virginia, to the mermaid carved into her throne, every detail was designed to be "read" by Elizabethan viewers as a statement of power, purity, and imperial ambition.
We explore all three surviving versions:
Woburn Abbey (the most complete, with intact Armada background scenes)
National Portrait Gallery (cut down in size, its seascape hidden under black paint for centuries)
The Queen's House, Greenwich (saved for the nation in 2016 after a ÂŁ10 million public appeal)
