When our children are little, we tell them they can be anything they want to be. A kid might dream of becoming a doctor, a scientist, a singer, a movie star, or any number of other awesome things, and we encourage them to dream big. Then they get a little older, and we start telling them to be more "realistic". We tell them that they need to go to college, get a degree, find a "real" job and stop acting so childish. In doing so, we kill their imagination and do long term damage to their psyche.
I never had the kind of encouragement I needed to really unlock my full potential when I was younger, and I vowed that if I had my own kids, I would encourage them and push them to chase their dreams. I've lived up to that, helping them as best I can as they grow older, and I think that is something we should all embrace when it comes to our kids. The real question we have to ask is, are the dreams too big or are we too limited in our imagination?
