As woodcarvers we often start our journey making wood spirits or other caricatures and they can be a lot of fun and a great challenge. But I decided to put a face on something else, and create a moon spirit. You can see every step I took including the use of my sloyd knife and small carving knife, as well as a wood sealer formula and the use of an interesting painting and wood colouring technique. A good friend of mine wanted me to make something for his son, we came up with the idea of a simple, chunky jigsaw puzzle perfect for little hands. Its a nice woodworking project made from maple and finished with some mineral oil and beeswax.
The animals featured are a bat, frog, snake, woodpecker and gecko. They were a little tricky to cut out and shape as maple is a very hard wood but theyll be solid and able to take some hits without getting too damaged.

My friend Ken visited Suffolk last year and gave me a piece of chestnut, a wood I had never used. There was just enough to make a box so make a box I did! I used a piece of leatherwork to inlay into the lid from my friend Randahl on Twitch. This was a fairly simple box build but it exercises a lot of different woodworking skills.
Ive made other wood boxes in the past on my YouTube channel, using joints like dovetails, rebates, mitres and even just butt joints with dowels. I think a box with rebated corners is a nice alternative to a mitred corner box as it shows very little of the end grain. You can even shape a curve to the box like I have here so no unsightly end grain shows at all.
