The Taliban were until their recent victory in August 2021, the largest Islamist movement in Afghanistan, though since 2014 they've been competing with ISIS-K, a branch of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria active in Afghanistan and the surrounding countries. But why do these two movements, who seemingly share such a similar fundamentalist and extreme interpretation of political Islam, hate one another so much?
