Hezbollah was established in the early 1980s during the Lebanese Civil War with Iranian backing to fight against Israeli expansion into the country. Representing the Shia minority of Lebanon, the group has become a state within a state, being arguably more powerful than the Lebanese military whilst also yielding considerable political power within the country.
